In John’s day, Greek alphabets were also used as numbers. Therefore, the Greek version of any name will have a number. This number is given to us: it is 666. Second, no scholar in two thousand years of theological endeavours has ever worked out who the number actually identified in John’s day. Some said it was referring to Nero, but this was not even suggested by ancient commentators who lived much closer to Nero’s historical existence. Even the famous theologian Irenaeus, a disciple of Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna, who lived only one hundred years after John, could not work it out. So, do we really think we can do better, living two thousand years later?
